Deane made over 200 appearances for Sheffield United over three different spells at the club. In 1991/1992, his 12 goals ensured Sheffield United finished 9th - their highest finish for 17 years - and therefore comfortably qualified for the newly-formed Premier League the following season. Deane is most famously remembered for scoring the first ever Premier League goal. His £2.9 million move to Leeds was a club record. Deane earned three England caps, two of which were against New Zealand.
