Alan played as a striker and began his career with Ipswich where he made over 200 appearances scoring 80 goals. He was a part of a squad that achieved great success, winning the FA Cup in the 77-78 season, the UEFA Cup during the 80-81 season and two consecutive 2nd place finishes in the First Division from 1980-82.

He moved on to Tottenham where he was part of the squad who won the UEFA cup in the 83-84 season and then Man Utd before back injuries derailed his playing career. Alan was a member of the Scotland squad who appeared at the 1982 World Cup.

Since retiring Alan has become well known as a sports broadcaster and presenter.
