Prutton began his career as an apprentice at Nottingham Forest in 1995, before going on to make over 150 appearances for the club. In 2003, he moved to Southampton, where he played over 80 games, before spells at Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday. Prutton played 25 times for England U-21s, and made over 480 career appearances in England's top divisions.
