Ashton began his career as a youth player at Crewe Alexandra, and went on to make over 150 appearances for the club. He then moved to Norwich in 2005, where he played 44 games. In 2006, he moved to West Ham and scored 15 goals in 46 games. During his time in London, Ashton played in the FA Cup final in 2006, and earned an England cap in 2008.
