Oakes played as a goalkeeper from 1991 to 2008. Most notably, Oakes played for Wolverhampton Wanderers. Oakes was the first-team goal-keeper until he suffered a shoulder injury in 2002. He appeared in a total of 199 league games for Wolverhampton. Oakes was honored with a medal during the 2003 Football League First Division playoff-final.
