Scharner played mostly as a defender for Wigan Athletic and West Bromwich Albion. Scharner was a vital player in the Wigan Athletic side, starting in almost every game during the 2007-08 season, and helping to keep Wigan in the Premier League. In 2010, Scharner joined then-newly promoted Premier League team West Bromwich Albion. He was moved from playing as a defender to midfield, where he scored seven league goals.
