Johnson played in midfield and spent time at Derby County and Leeds United. He moved to Derby County in 1999, making seventy-three appearances and scoring two goals in his first spell. He moved to Leeds United in 2001 but a series of injuries limited his appearances. He moved back to Derby County where he finished his career in 2007.
